Canon Project

A new project is beginning today! In the service of Little Compline, between the Creed and the hymn “Axion Estin” (It is truly meet to bless you), monastic tradition places a Canon of Supplication to the Theotokos from the regular cycle of hymns, the Octoechos. I’ve looked through several printed copies of this cycle and not found these canons published. I found one source for them in traditional language which many folks prefer. Sadly, they are only available in larger PDFs – one for each day of the week in each of the Eight Tones. Thus, to find the Canon for Saturday in Tone 1 (for example) you need to download the hymns and services for all of that Saturday. Users of the Anthologion from St Ignatius Orthodox Press are using modern English and so the jump back and forth is complicated by needing a PDF and the switch between styles of English.

(BTW: The Anthologion is highly recommended for anyone who wants reader services for their daily prayers: it is useful to both Eastern Rite Catholics and the Orthodox, using either the New Calendar or the Julian Calendar. It’s wonderful!)

(Update: 29 Oct 2024: Tone 1 completed, but some typos still. Takes about 4 days to do a whole week on my current schedule.)
